On Cemeteries

Birding In Cemeteries

Birding can serve as a unique and engaging point of entry into the often overlooked worlds of cemeteries and historic preservation. Cemeteries, particularly older ones, can be ecological hotspots, providing a diverse habitat for various bird species. We encourage cemeteries involved with the Unity Cemetery Preservation Fund to reach out to diverse groups to support the preservation of these spaces.

More than a punctuation mark

What is in a dash? Every cemetery contains the power of the dash—that simple mark that is between the day a person comes onto the planet and the day they leave. We can expand the view of cemeteries from places that house the dead to places that support the proliferation of memory and life. They are places that honor people who demonstrated the power of the human spirit. From veterans to artists to abolitionists, cemeteries comprise an anthology of people who have made the most of their dash.

Other Readings

Cemetery Citizens encourages explorations of the communities that grow around neglected cemeteries and tells some of the stories of those involved in preserving these spaces. The book features Geer Cemetery, our first grant recipient.
